I'm not exactly sure why I like this image. It think it's because it shows how clear the skies are in this part of Australia. The bridge and boats were dimly illuminated from a nearby streetlight.

Vivid Sydney

I headed out with the Focus photography group to the Vivid Festival in Sydney on Saturday night. There are some great effects on the Opera House, which are beamed on from the Overseas Passenger Terminal. This image was taken directly below the projector and the wide angle of view shows the beams hitting the Opera House sails.

golden hour at Lake Wanaka

Autumn colours at Lake Wanaka are really accentuated by golden hour. I lined up the buoy in the water with the mountain peak to centre the composition. There were beautiful high level clouds on this evening.

Quindalup serenity

This little boat ramp in Quindalup, Western Australia, is a great little location. There was only a brief glimmer of colour from the sunrise but it still made for a nice image.

This shot was taken with a Heliopan 105mm CPL, a Lee 0.9 solid ND, and a Lee 0.9 soft grad, which I find to be an amazing combination.

The Pinnacles, Nambung National Park, Western Australia

Taken after sunset, there was still a golden hue to the light and the absence of shadows creates an interesting presence of these amazing stone pillars. The mechanism by which these unique stone formations were created is still unsure. One theory is that they are stone casts from an ancient forest. Whatever created them, it sure is a cool place.

Moeraki self portrait

After sunrise at Moeraki I saw an opportunity to take a self portrait on a rock that was just calling out to be used as a pedestal. Not that I like putting myself up on a pedestal, it just seemed like a good idea! A bunch of photographers saw me taking this shot and must also have thought it was a good idea as they began lining up for their turn.

Quindalup, South Western Australia

A very overcast sky led to a very blue sunrise at Quindalup boat ramp. The longer exposure really accentuated the colours. I had thoughts of processing in monochrome, but the turquoise waters made me decide against it. I really like the spot lighting over the jetty from the diffused sunlight breaking through the clouds.

Huge sand dunes near Cervantes, Western Australia.

This upload is slightly different for me, not the wide landscape you may have come to expect. However I find sometimes the detail can be just as overwhelming as a grand vista. These untouched dunes had the most amazing patterns in the early morning sunshine, all pointing to the peak of the dune, and having a stunning 3 dimensional effect.

Sugarloaf Rock, Leeuwin-Naturaliste National Park, Western Australia.

I was fortunate enough to spend the last week or so in Western Australia, and decided to make the most of it and check out some places I've always wanted to photograph.

I got really lucky with the sunset the evening I went out to Sugarloaf Rock. I was originally planning to shoot it at sunrise, but thought I'd at least scope it out the night before. As it turned out the sunrise the following morning was non-existent, so I was pretty happy how that turned out. Am very glad I got to visit this beautiful part of the world.
